Many forms of vertigo can be diagnosed by clinical exam. However, diagnostic testing is used to refine and focus a diagnosis.

A VNG, or videonystagmography, is a test of various parts of balance function. By itself it is not diagnostic, but it can assist in identifying problems in certain parts of the central and peripheral balance system.

Imaging, in particular an MRI or CT scan, can be of significant benefit when diagnosing and treating balance problems.
